Zack and I chose the Grizzly Falls Ziplining excursion. We booked this excursion through Princess cruise line. It’s a 4 hour excursion including pick up and drop off time. It has 11 different courses and 4 canopy suspension bridges. The zipline courses are incredible! They took us over glacially fed waterfalls in the middle of the rain forest. We also got to ride in a unimog up the mountain, where the zipline course began. At the end of the excursion they let everyone try glacier water. http://alaska-shoreexcursions.com/skagway/grizzly-falls-ziplining-adventure-tour?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIx_XEvbPy2wIVkuNkCh2-jgtbEAAYASAAEgI9jvD_BwEThe White Pass and Yukon Route Railway is another popular excursion in Skagway. The rest of my family chose the train excursion, and they had a blast!
RED ONION SALOON
The Red Onion Saloon was brothel built in 1897. Today, it is a “haunted” restaurant, bar and museum. The waitresses wear brothel attire, making guests feel like they traveled back in time. The entire upstairs of the Red Onion Saloon is blocked off for tours. Visitors are able to tour the rooms where the sporting women used to live. The tour was very interesting and informative. I learned a lot touring this brothel/museum. http://redonion1898.com/brothel-museum-tours/
If you plan on touring the Red Onion Saloon any time soon, read no more! I don’t want to spoil it for you! There is a story behind these dolls pictured below.. Each doll resembled one of the sporting women in the early 1900’s. When a man wanted some ‘company’, he would select the girl he wanted, and the doll that resembled the chosen sporting women, would be placed on her back. This let the other men know that women/doll was not available for the time being. After 15 minutes of ‘fun’, the doll would be placed back on display sitting next to the other available dolls.
It was expensive to live in Skagway in the early 1900’s. To have a respectable job, like a cook, or maid, they would expect to make around $3 a day. In order to live comfortably in Skagway, they would need $6 a day. Many women resorted to prostitution because they would expect to make around $60 a day. Many sporting women liked working at the Red Onion Saloon because they got to decorate their room. In the museum, they have wallpaper displayed in glass cases that the sporting women chose to decorate their room with.
